FAQs for the book club

  • Currently the book clubs are taking place in the following locations:

    • South London

    • North London

    • West London

    • Guildford

    • Sheffield

    • Bristol

Details about each club are in the header, click on the page to find out information about each club and the book club lead.

  • Every month, we put a vote together. In this vote there’s a selection of titles which our book club members have picked.

We pick four of those titles and put them to our book clubs across the country to vote.

Once we have picked the winning title, we have four weeks to read the book and then we come together one evening to discuss the book, over an agenda which our book club leads have put together - this isn’t as intense as it sounds though, it’s just a little guide for us to follow if we fancy it. We love it when the conversation goes off course, we want our members to have the best evenings, so we will go with the flow!

There’s never any pressure to have read all of the book, whilst we cannot promise that you won’t hear any spoilers, we wouldn’t want that to dissuade you from joining us.

  • We are then super lucky and have occasional author events. Just like our book clubs, there’s zero pressure to have read the book.

Our author events are a chance for you to meet the author behind the pages, get to know their writing style, learn about how the concept came about, and ask them any of your burning questions.

Our authors will always sign your books for you, and when we can, we will have a bookseller present.

We can’t promise that each author can go to every book club area, but we always keep our social media pages up to date - so we’d highly recommend you following our pages to find out what is happening in each local area.

  • Our book club members. The book club is for the members, so we want to read the books which most interest you.

If you have a burning desire for us to read something please do let us know. You can DM us, WhatsApp us or email us!

  • Each book club area has its own newsletter, so that we can share news which is local and relevant to you. Links to join the newsletters are below.

  • We would love for you to join our local WhatsApp groups!

On there we are building a gorgeous little community where we share book recommendations but also so much more - news about what is going on in the local community, other events, which podcast people are listening to, and news about our book club socials.

Please find the book club area which you would like to join and send them an email asking to be added to their WhatsApp group (please remember to give them your name and mobile number!).

  • Yes there are! We go to the cinema, we go on summer walks, we go to galleries and museums, we have picnic in the parks, and so much more! We are all ears to new ideas though, so if there is something which you fancy doing, please do let us know.

Something to note - we try to put on as many socials as we can, but please remember we are all running the book clubs alongside our full time jobs, so any help organising them would go a long way!

  • Absolutely not! You come as and when you can. We are creating judgment free zones where our members can dip in and out as you see fit. We want you to enjoy your time with us, not feel pressured to come along. We totally appreciate that life can become hectic, so if you would like to join us every month or join us once a year -  we will welcome you back with open arms.

  • Thank you for the feedback. Firstly, we can completely appreciate that purchasing newly published books on a monthly basis can become a pricy hobby to maintain!

To provide some context, the reading interests of the community is what leads our book club, where from London to Sheffield to Bristol, our followers and members decide on what the book of the month will be using a poll. Whilst the book club committee decides on the shortlist for the poll, many requests across the clubs do typically involve one or two new releases which is unavoidable. Whilst we can’t stop the majority votes towards a new publication, we do ensure there is a range of books which make the final shortlist.

A suggestion which might be helpful to you is sourcing the book from your local library or downloading the ‘Borrow Box’ app, where you can borrow a huge variety of eBooks and eAudiobooks. Libby is also another popular library app to check out too.

We hope this helps explain the rationale behind our monthly book choice. Your feedback is incredible valuable to us and we do our best to include a range of texts, such as The Bell Jar (Sylvia Plath), The Colour Purple (Alice Walker) and All About Love (bell hooks) as some of the historic titles read in 2024.

  • Nope! Not at all. Although we cannot promise that you won’t hear spoilers throughout the evening. However, we know it can sometimes be difficult to finish a book. But our conversations are fun, enriching and a great chance to meet like-minded people.

  • We are so grateful to our members for paying to come along to our book club. Unlike many other clubs, the book club is a registered organisation, meaning that we have to pay taxes, accountancy fees, equipment costs, author fees and travel, and we pay one staff member who works on this for 15 hours a week.

We totally appreciate why you may ask this question, but we put a lot of energy into making the book club be as brilliant as it can, and to do that, it costs money. However, we would never want the price point to be a barrier to entry, and are consistently reviewing and reflecting this.

If the fee is a barrier, please speak to your book club lead who will offer you a subsidised or free ticket.

  • Absolutely! As mentioned in the previous question, please speak to your book club lead, or email us, and we can offer you a subsidised ticket or a free space.
