NLFBC - May Book Club

  • Dogstarr 385 Coldharbour Lane London, England, SW9 8GL United Kingdom (map)

For May's North London Feminist Book Club, we will be covering 'I'm Glad My Mom Died' by Jennette McCurdy, on Tuesday 2 May at The Dame Alice Owen pub in Angel, from 7-9:30pm.

About the book:

In I'm Glad My Mom Died, Jennette recounts all this in unflinching detail-just as she chronicles what happens when the dream finally comes true.

Cast in a new Nickelodeon series called iCarly, she is thrust into fame. Though Mom is ecstatic, emailing fan club moderators and getting on a first-name basis with the paparazzi ("Hi Gale!"), Jennette is riddled with anxiety, shame, and self-loathing, which manifest into eating disorders, addiction, and a series of unhealthy relationships.

These issues only get worse when, soon after taking the lead in the iCarly spinoff Sam & Cat alongside Ariana Grande, her mother dies of cancer. Finally, after discovering therapy and quitting acting, Jennette embarks on recovery and decides for the first time in her life what she really wants.

Told with refreshing candor and dark humor, 'I'm Glad My Mom Died' is an inspiring story of resilience, independence, and the joy of shampooing your own hair.

Ticket prices:

Tickets are £10 but if you cannot afford them then just drop us an email at: northldnfeministbookclub@gmail.com and we'll see what we can do. Likewise with the book... or why not check it out from your local library, second-hand shop, Kindle or book swap with a friend?

Refund policy:

If the North London book club is doing to be anything like our South London sister, we expect these events will be busy and become popular (we hope!). We are super fortunate that our events tend to sell out, so because of this we operate a refund policy to make it fair for all.

If you cancel 7 days before the event you will get a 100% refund

If you cancel 4 days before the event you will get a 50% refund

Anything closer to the date, we will not offer refunds. We have decided on this as it is unfair to ask anybody to read at such a speedy rate - we know we definitely couldn't!
